Is wine really good for your health?

This is the age old question that we don’t really want to know the answer to... We may be blissfully happy in the knowledge there are definitely some good properties in wine (?) It’s something to do with anti-oxidants, it’s something to do with healthy hearts, or maybe it’s promoting good mental health..?

Wine tastes good.

I think we’re all in agreement wine tastes good, and many of us have integrated it into a way of life. So I’ve laid the facts bare for those who want to know the truth about wine and whether wine is really good for us.

Don’t binge.

Of course it’s common sense that alcohol must be drunk in moderation. Any good properties of wine will be counteracted with binge consumption. According to the British Heart Foundation, drinking more than two units a day may be harmful. A medium glass of wine of average strength (11-13%abv) is between 1.5-2 units.

Antioxidants.

But this doesn’t mean you need to switch to the non-alcoholic grape juice just yet! There are benefits, especially for men and women over the age of 40, as drinking 1-2 units a day does provide some protection against heart disease. Drinking wine in moderation has shown to prevent clots and reduce blood vessel inflammation. Red wine in particular contains antioxidants such as quercetin and resveratrol, which have proven abilities in preventing both heart disease and cancer.

Red, red wine!

In comparison to white wine, red wine has higher levels of polyphenols and antioxidants. The darker the wine the higher the level of antioxidants. For example, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon are kings of the bunch, with high levels of tannins from the skins and pips of the grape and deep & indulgent in colour. Research has also proven reds from cooler regions such as Bordeaux, Burgundy and Rioja have higher antioxidants than reds from hotter regions.

Forget-me-not

In addition, wine in moderation can help with memory. A study shows that women over 70 who drank more or less every day tended to be less forgetful than those who drank very little to nothing.

Watching your waistline!

Drinking on a daily basis has proven effect on your waistline! In comparison with people who indulge only on occasion, those who drink a small glass everyday have a narrower waist and less abdominal fat on average. This is due to your body burning fat for an extra 90 minute after drinking a glass of wine!

To round things off drinking wine in moderation and regularly can also help to boost your immunity against ulcers and stomach cancers, it can also help you to build strong bones due to a boost in estrogen! Good news all round for wine lovers out there!

Always remember to drink responsibly. Binge drinking may make you feel invincible but the result can be very damaging to your health and wellbeing.
