Alsace

This easterly wine region is in France, was once in Germany, but has a spirit that is uniquely itself. Alsace is one of the sunniest regions in France, and is a centre of organic and biodynamic farming for all types of fruit, not just wine grapes. This is a region of quirky characters, and of a cheery, affable informality that translates to social gatherings, and the style of cuisine. The wines are expressive, open-hearted, and wonderful with many different styles of cuisine.

Alsace is predominantly white wine country, and produces some of the greatest, age-worthy and underestimated whites of France, and possibly Europe. Riesling, Pinot Gris, Muscat and Gewurztraminer occupy the top sites and press attention, but Pinot Blanc and Sylvaner also make lovely wines here. Whites range from bone dry to gloriously sweet. In recent years, Alsace has excelled at making Crémant – dry sparkling wines produced using the Champagne method. Alsace Crémant is now one of the most popular sparkling wines of France.
