The hills are alive this week as we take a trip to the mountainous landscape of Austria! This cool climate country is famous for producing predominantly white wines with a steely backbone and impressive body.
Wine has been grown around the Danube river since Roman times. However, it was the influence of the church, that has been the most significant factor in the evolution of wine agriculture. Without the church’s nurturing hand, the cultivation of vineyards and establishing Vienna as a centre of wine trade would have been stunted. After World War I, Austria was the third biggest wine producer in the world. Regrettably, this was bulk wine sold mainly to Germany to make up big blend wines and compromised on quality.
Today the landscape of Austrian wine is quite different. They now sit 16th on the list of wine producing countries in the world, with wines of such quality that rival the best in the world. We see Austria with a very strong identity, making wines from signature grape varieties such as Grüner Veltliner and Zweigelt.
The natural acidity that runs through Austrian whites has awarded this country an incomparable reputation for making premium wines with sophistication. Likewise, reds are made with impeccable precision and balance from varieties such as Blaufränkisch, Pinot Noir and locally bred Zweigelt.
Austria not only makes incredible wine, it is also home to Riedel, makers of some of the most expensive and well-made wine glasses in the world. A happy companion to sensational wine!
