Flavours of cassis, peppered strawberries, cherries, earthy spices, and loganberries are all on show, their concentration and energy typical of the outstanding 2021 Curicó vintage. The structure is firm, but everything is in proportion and the tannins are fine-grained and polished, while the acidity is cleansing but not obtrusive. This special terroir imparts a highly distinctive minerality to the wines. Vieux Télégraphe is made from predominantly three grape varieties, 65% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre plus 5% Cinsault and Clairette. In their state-of-the-art gravity flow winery, the grapes are partially destemmed and are fermented in both stainless steel and wood cuves. The blending is done at the end of June after which the wine is matured in large foudres for 20 months. The red wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered and display tremendous concentration and intense flavours of dark cherry and “garrigue”. When the war ended, Miller bought the surplus hangars and barracks for a dollar and turned them into the headquarters of the family's Airport Ranch — two of the original hangars still stand today. The wines are grown on the family's 830-acre estate vineyard in the Yakima Valley AVA, farmed sustainably and largely in a vegan style, and the range has picked up a long list of accolades over the years, including 90+ point scores from Wine Enthusiast, Wine Spectator, James Suckling and Wine Advocate, plus Double Platinum and Best in Show wins at regional competitions.

90 Points - Wine Enthusiast. Lone Birch's 2024 Pinot Gris is a crisp, no-oak white from the family's Yakima Valley estate.

Wine Press Ratings

90 Points - Wine Enthusiast (2024)

Taste

In Lone Birch's house style, the Pinot Gris typically shows white peach, lime zest and tangerine on the nose, with lemon meringue, kiwi juice and floral notes on the palate. Growing up on the farm, the brothers helped their uncle, Ron Schmidt, plant the 26-acre Copeland Vineyard in 2000, crushed their first vintage two years later, and bought the operation outright in 2006. They named the winery for Mt. Adams and Mt.
