Fresh, silky and full of red fruit, it has the elegance of Pessac-Léognan at a friendlier price than the big name neighbours. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot share the lead, with a touch of Petit Verdot for spice, so it is structured but soft enough to enjoy now. Picked by hand in small crates, from a vineyard certified High Environmental Value. Decant it and serve it with a roast, a good steak or a slow braise.

Taste

Deep colour with an expressive, balanced nose of fresh cherry and red fruit over a delicate, well integrated oak background. The palate is energetic and dynamic, with a fruity, unctuous attack, tangy red fruit, silky, caressing tannins and plenty of freshness. The finish is soft and long. Fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel with gentle extraction. Delicious now with a decant, and it should keep well for a decade or more.

Blend

Cabernet Sauvignon 53%, Merlot 45%, Petit Verdot 2%

About the Producer

Château Brown is in Léognan, at the heart of Pessac-Léognan, on gravel soils mixed with sandy clay that drain well and ripen the grapes slowly. Vines have been grown here since the 12th century, and the name comes from John Lewis Brown, a wealthy Scottish wine trader who settled in Bordeaux in 1795. The estate was fully restored in the late 20th century, and since 2004 it has been owned by the Mau family and the Dutch Dirkzwager family, with Jean-Christophe Mau managing it. The vineyard has been certified High Environmental Value (HVE Level 3) since January 2018, and on the 60 hectare estate only around half is planted with vines, with the rest kept as woodland, hedges and orchard for wildlife. The grapes are picked by hand into small crates.
