Cabernet Sauvignon leads with dark fruit and structure, and Merlot adds a lush, velvety heart, so it has Margaux elegance without losing its depth. It was made before the Le Lous family took over in 2019, and it is still closed and youthful. Decant it for a few hours and serve it with roast beef, lamb or duck, or lay it down for another decade.

Taste

Deep garnet in the glass. The nose shows flowers, truffle, espresso, tobacco and dark red fruits, with ample dark berries and plums, cocoa, freshly cut bracken and boysenberry. The palate is full bodied, lush and round, with layers of fruit and energy, dense, structured tannins and a fresh, upbeat finish. Poised and confident, with all the elegance of Margaux. Aged for 16 months in French oak, 60% of it new. Drinkable now with a long decant, and it should open up over the next decade and keep to 2050.

Wine Press Ratings

95 Points - Decanter (2016 Vintage)

"going to blossom into an awesome Margaux"

95 Points - Vinous (2016 Vintage)

"seems to have grown aromatically since I last tasted it"

95 Points - Jeff Leve (2016 Vintage)

"deep, packed with juice and vivacious"

Blend

Cabernet Sauvignon 68%, Merlot 32%

About the Producer

Château Cantenac Brown was founded in the early 19th century by John Lewis Brown, a Scottish wine merchant who built the Tudor style château that makes it one of the most distinctive buildings in the Médoc. It was ranked a Third Growth in 1855. Since 2019 it has been owned by the Le Lous family, with Tristan Le Lous at its head and José Sanfins as director. Sustainable viticulture has been practised here since 1996, and the vineyard is described as certified HVE Level 3. The estate has also built a new cellar of raw earth and untreated timber, designed to be carbon neutral.
