Liquid gold with pineapple, tangerine and orange confit, but with the cutting freshness that gave the estate its name, which comes from a Gascon word for knife. Sémillon leads, touched by noble rot, which concentrates the grapes into honeyed richness without ever feeling heavy. Serve it chilled with foie gras, blue cheese or a fruit tart, or simply on its own after dinner.

Taste

Light golden colour. The nose is intense and very Barsac, with apricot, pineapple, tangerine oil and orange confit, plus saffron, honeysuckle and exotic spice. Dried white mushroom and flower notes add depth. The palate is medium to full bodied, round and supple, with a viscous opening, then brightness and tension, and a spicy, minty finish that goes on and on. Aged for 18 months in barrels. Delicious now, and built to keep for decades.

Wine Press Ratings

96 Points - Tim Atkin (2022 Vintage)

95 Points - Wine Spectator (2022 Vintage)

95 Points - Vinous (2022 Vintage)

"There's great balance here."

94 Points - James Suckling (2022 Vintage)

"Such a balance and classiness to this."

Blend

Sémillon 94%, Sauvignon Blanc 5%, Muscadelle 1%

About the Producer

Château Coutet is one of the oldest estates in Sauternes and Barsac, with vines recorded here since 1643. Thomas Jefferson visited in 1787 and named it the best Sauternes of Barsac, and it was ranked a first growth in the 1855 classification. It has been owned by the Baly family since 1977, when Marcel Baly and his sons Philippe and Dominique took over, and Aline Baly now represents the third generation. Its wines are distributed exclusively by Baron Philippe de Rothschild. The 38 hectare vineyard sits on clay and limestone soils, one of the largest in Barsac, and has been certified High Environmental Value (HVE Level 3), with planted hedges, beehives and a focus on soil biodiversity. In 2022 the grapes were picked by hand in four selections between late September and late October.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0272/9843/1058/files/ChateauCoutetBarsac1erGrandCruClasse.png?v=1790770943
