Critics have called the 2021 a modern version of the estate's much loved 1999, a wine that charms early yet ages beautifully. Cabernet Sauvignon leads with cassis and graphite, and Merlot and Cabernet Franc add plushness and perfume. A touch of Petit Verdot gives it spice. Decant it for an hour, then serve it with roast lamb, a good steak or a mushroom dish.

Taste

Deep garnet purple in the glass. The nose is heady and perfumed, with minty cassis, blackberry and black cherry, then pencil shavings, sweet pipe tobacco, a dusting of clove and cinnamon and a twist of orange peel. Medium bodied and beautifully balanced, with ripe fruit, graphite and ample minerality, it is sleek and precise. The finish is long, fresh and elegant. Enjoyable now with a decant, and it should keep well for 15 years or more.

Wine Press Ratings

94 Points - Decanter (2021 Vintage)

"pure, precise and clean"

92 Points - Wine Advocate (2021 Vintage)

"bursting with attractive aromas of minty cassis and blackberries"

92 Points - James Suckling (2021 Vintage)

Blend

Cabernet Sauvignon 63%, Merlot 22%, Cabernet Franc 13%, Petit Verdot 2%

About the Producer

Château d'Armailhac has been rooted in the Pauillac terroir since the 14th century, and it was classified as a Fifth Growth in 1855. Until 1955 it was sold as Mouton d'Armailhacq, and it took its present name in 1989. Its vineyard sits next to Château Mouton Rothschild on four gravel banks, and it is owned by the descendants of Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Lucie Lauilhé runs the estate as estate director and winemaker, and 2021 was its first year with a new cellar. The estate is known for a Pauillac style that is elegant and charming young, with a more playful, fruit driven personality than many of its neighbours.
