Perfumed with rose petals and red fruit, it is silky, juicy and elegant, and it carries the polish that Margaux is loved for. Cabernet Sauvignon leads, with Merlot adding softness and a touch of Petit Verdot for spice. Well made, seriously charming and ready to drink with a decant, it suits roast lamb, duck or a good steak.

Taste

Medium to deep garnet in the glass. The nose is perfumed and vivacious, with kirsch, raspberry coulis and blackberry pie, then crushed plum, boysenberry, rose petals, a touch of cassis, and hints of spice cake, incense and toasted bread. The palate is medium to full bodied, fleshy and elegant, with fine grained tannins and refreshing fruit, and a long, perfumed finish with a whisper of sandalwood and smoky tea. Aged in French oak, half of it new, which gives a smoky edge in youth. Delicious now with a decant, and it should keep well into the mid 2030s.

Wine Press Ratings

94 Points - Falstaff (2015 Vintage)

"juicy and elegant"

93 Points - Jeb Dunnuck (2015 Vintage)

"shows how good 2015 was for the appellation of Margaux"

92 Points - Wine Advocate (2015 Vintage)

"a whole bunch of rose petals in the glass"

91 Points - Decanter (2015 Vintage)

"rich and firm damson and redcurrant fruits"

91 Points - Wine Spectator (2015 Vintage)

"Lovely, with crushed plum, boysenberry and blackberry fruit"

Blend

Cabernet Sauvignon 60%, Merlot 35%, Petit Verdot 5%

About the Producer

Château Desmirail is a Third Growth of Margaux, founded in the 17th century by Jean Desmirail, who came by the vineyard as part of a dowry from the Rauzan family. Its vines sit in Cantenac, surrounded by neighbours such as Rauzan-Ségla and Palmer, on deep gravel soils. The estate re-emerged as an independent label in 1981 under Lucien Lurton, and it is now owned by his son Denis Lurton, with the celebrated Eric Boissenot as consulting winemaker. Denis has banned chemical weedkillers and insecticides for decades, and the vineyard has been certified High Environmental Value (HVE Level 3) since the 2018 vintage. Its second wine is Initial de Desmirail.
