Silky, perfumed and deep, with blackcurrant, violets and cedar, it has the poise of a wine that costs far more. Cabernet Sauvignon leads, bringing structure and dark fruit, while Merlot adds plushness and a little Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot add spice and lift. A classified Third Growth from the heart of Margaux, it belongs with roast lamb, a côte de boeuf or a winter Sunday. Decant it generously and give it time.

Taste

Deep ruby purple in the glass. The nose is luxurious, with blackcurrant, orange peel, spring flowers and violets, over cedar, smoky tobacco, dried mushroom and graphite, plus spiced sandalwood, incense and black pepper. The palate is medium to full bodied and tightly wound, with tannins that are silky yet chewy, and freshness that keeps it light on its feet. The finish is long, mineral and refined, and it grows on the palate with each sip. Aged for 16 to 18 months in oak, half of it new. Enjoyable now with a long decant, and built to keep for decades.

Wine Press Ratings

98 Points - James Suckling (2022 Vintage)

"Probably the greatest wine ever from here."

96 Points - Decanter (2022 Vintage)

"One of the most exciting wines this year"

96 Points - Jeb Dunnuck (2022 Vintage)

"2022 Château d'Issan is rock star stuff"

95 Points - Wine Advocate (2022 Vintage)

"a ton of personality"

Blend

Cabernet Sauvignon 65%, Merlot 30%, Cabernet Franc 2%, Malbec 2%, Petit Verdot 1%

About the Producer

Château d'Issan is a Third Growth of the 1855 classification, in the heart of Margaux at Cantenac. It is one of Bordeaux's oldest wine estates, with a history going back to the 12th century, and it is surrounded by a moat and a 17th century château. The Cruse family bought the estate in 1945, when it was battered by war and neglect, and Emmanuel Cruse took over management in 1998 with the ambition of competing with the very best of Margaux. In 2012 the Lorenzetti family, who also own Château Pédesclaux in Pauillac, became partners. The grand vin comes from the old vines within the château enclosure, in the middle of the appellation.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0272/9843/1058/files/ChateauD_IssanMargaux_421adf72-9bce-44b5-ad77-ddefe06af8d8.png?v=1790775369
