The 2021 scored 94 points with James Suckling and with the French guide Terre de Vins, and it is fresh, elegant and delicious now. Cabernet Sauvignon leads by a long way, bringing structure and cassis, while Cabernet Franc adds a lifted, floral, savoury touch. A little Merlot and Petit Verdot round it off. It is a classic, pure Margaux for roast lamb, duck or a good steak, best with a short decant.

Taste

Dark ruby garnet with a deep core and purple reflections. The nose is fresh and savoury, with blackberry confit, black cherry and cassis, plus cedar, violets, sappy green tobacco, mint, espresso and a hint of orange zest. The palate is medium bodied and streamlined, with sweet red fruit, chalky, mineral tannins and bright acidity, then a supple, velvety finish with good length. Elegant and quietly charming rather than heavy. Delicious now, and it should keep for 15 years or more.

Wine Press Ratings

94 Points - James Suckling (2021 Vintage)

94 Points - Terre de Vins (2021 Vintage)

"energetic, juicy, firm and sappy"

93 Points - Decanter (2021 Vintage)

"elegantly presented with balance all the way through"

Blend

Cabernet Sauvignon 64%, Cabernet Franc 20%, Merlot 10%, Petit Verdot 6%

About the Producer

Château du Tertre takes its name from the tertre, or hillock, on which it sits in Arsac, on one of the highest gravel outcrops of the Margaux appellation. Its origins go back to the 12th century, and it was ranked a Fifth Growth in the 1855 classification. The vineyard lies in one unbroken block around the château. Eric Albada Jelgersma bought it in 1997 and invested heavily in the vineyard and cellar. Since January 2021 it has been owned by the Helfrich family of Les Grands Chais de France, with Frédéric Ardouin as technical director. The estate began trialling biodynamic farming in 2008, planting hedgerows and using natural fertilisers, and the vineyard has been steadily moved towards it since.
