Cabernet Sauvignon gives it backbone and blackcurrant, and Merlot adds a supple, gentle heart. It is a wine for a quiet dinner, with roast lamb, duck, mushrooms or aged cheese. Thomas Jefferson visited in 1787 and placed it just behind the First Growths, and it was ranked a Second Growth in 1855. Lucien Lurton took it over in 1961, and his son Gonzague Lurton has run it since 1992, so this 1999 was made in his early years there.
