Chateau Haut-Bages Liberal Pauillac 2019

Chateau Haut-Bages Liberal Pauillac 2019

95 Points - Wine Enthusiast. Haut Bages Liberal produced one of its finest wines in 2019. James Suckling awarded it 96-100 describing it as, ‘Full and racy with wonderful length and purity.’ The 2019 Bordeaux vintage was simply stunning. Having tasted 270 wines at a recent tasting, Jancis Robinson MW declared it to be ‘perhaps the best I have ever tasted at this stage.’ A challenging spring was followed by a glorious summer and early autumn that gifted producers a crop of exceptional grapes. Thanks to the pandemic, many producers, including Haut Bages Liberal released their wines at bargain prices, and the wines still offer incredible value for money.

Wine Press Ratings

95 Points - Wine Enthusiast

"The classed growth, whose vineyard is in the south of Pauillac, is now performing impressively. This release has succulent black fruits that are braced with tannins and a firm, spicy structure. It is a dense wine that will age. Drink from 2026. "

Taste

The 2019 Haut-Bages-Libéral has turned out superbly, offering up aromas of wild berries, cassis, licorice, rose petals and sweet soil tones, followed by a medium to full-bodied, velvety and seamless palate, its powdery structuring tannins hidden in an ample core of lively, succulent fruit. From biodynamically farmed vineyards located on clay-limestone and gravel soils to the north of Château Latour (as well as a parcel of gravel sandwiched between Pichon-Baron and Lynch-Bages), this is a terrific effort from an estate that deserves to be much better known. Drink Date 2026 – 2060. William Kelley, RobertParker.com

About the Producer

Haut Bages Liberal is an eighteenth-century property that was awarded Cinquieme Cru Classé (fifth growth) status in the 1855 classification.  It lies in the commune of Paulliac, with vineyards that neighbour Chateau Pichon Comtesse and Chateau Latour.  Its vineyards are made of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot, all of which lie on deep, free-draining gravel. An innovative and quality-focused producer, Haut Bages Liberal was certified as organic and biodynamic in 2019. Always good, its wines have taken a marked turn for the better in recent vintages and it is now regarded as one of the finest in Bordeaux.
