Cabernet Sauvignon dominates, with crème de cassis, graphite and pencil lead, while a little Merlot adds roundness, and the result is classic, concentrated and built to last. The vineyard is farmed without herbicides, and the estate is HVE certified. Decant it for a few hours and serve it with roast beef, lamb or a great cheese board, or lay it down for another decade.

Taste

Intense ruby colour. The nose is vivid, with crème de cassis, black cherry, blackcurrant and blueberry, plus cigar box, loamy soil, graphite, liquid rock and a touch of ink. The palate is full bodied, concentrated and layered, with plum, blackberry and blueberry paste flavours, bright acidity and ripe, building tannins, all carried by a perfectly integrated, brambly spine. The finish is long and focused. Aged in French oak. Rewarding now with a long decant, and it should drink beautifully until the 2040s.

Wine Press Ratings

97 Points - Wine Spectator (2016 Vintage)

"Both regal and rambunctious, this is St.-Julien to a T."

97 Points - James Suckling (2016 Vintage)

"Terrific intensity of dark berries, almost peppery blackcurrants and violets"

97 Points - Wine Advocate (2016 Vintage)

"A brilliant young wine"

Blend

Cabernet Sauvignon 86%, Merlot 14%

About the Producer

Château Léoville Barton is a Second Growth of Saint-Julien, born in 1826 when the Barton family, Irish born wine merchants who came to Bordeaux in the early 18th century, bought a quarter of the Léoville domaine. It has no château of its own, so the wine is made at Château Langoa Barton, which has been in the family since 1821. Anthony Barton ran the estates until 2022, and today the tenth generation oversees them, with Lilian Barton-Sartorius at its head and her children Damien and Mélanie increasingly involved. The vineyard was certified High Environmental Value (HVE) in April 2020, and it is managed without weeding or herbicide, with traditional ploughing.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0272/9843/1058/files/ChateauLeovilleBartonSaint-Julien_1.png?v=1790865249
