It has the opulence of a sunny year and the muscle and precision of true Pauillac, and it is now entering its prime after more than 15 years. Cabernet Sauvignon leads with blackcurrant and pencil lead, and Merlot adds a rich, velvety heart. It is a wine for roast beef, lamb or a great cheese board, decanted well ahead. Bottles with this pedigree and age are getting harder to find.

Taste

Deep garnet in the glass. The nose is powerful, with blackcurrant, crème de cassis, blackberry pie and baked plum, then freshly sharpened pencils, smoked tobacco, gravelly earth, chocolate, incense and bay leaf. The palate is full bodied and concentrated, with a firm, grainy texture, muscular but beautifully integrated tannins and a lively backbone. The finish is very long and structured. Aged for 15 months in French oak, about 70% new. Just entering its prime, and it should keep for another 20 to 30 years.

Wine Press Ratings

98 Points - Jeb Dunnuck (2009 Vintage)

"In the running for the greatest vintage ever from this château"

98 Points - Jane Anson (2009 Vintage)

"muscular, ripped, will power for decades"

96 Points - Wine Advocate (2009 Vintage)

"boldly scented of crème de cassis, blackberry pie and baked plums"

Blend

Cabernet Sauvignon 76%, Merlot 18%, Cabernet Franc 4%, Petit Verdot 2%

About the Producer

Château Lynch-Bages is a Fifth Growth of Pauillac that many rank well above its classification. It takes its name from Thomas Lynch, a Bordeaux merchant of Irish descent who owned it in the 18th century, and it has been owned by the Cazes family for almost a century. Jean-Charles Cazes defined its style in the 1930s, and it is known for often being among the last to harvest. Its vines sit on the gravel plateau of Bages, west of Pauillac town. The Cazes family later added other estates, including Ormes de Pez and Haut-Batailley.
