This mature Second Growth comes from the Saint-Estèphe estate that Wine Spectator calls a jewel of the northern Médoc, and that has earned a string of perfect 100 point scores in recent vintages. Cabernet Sauvignon gives it structure and blackcurrant, while Merlot adds a supple, gentle heart. It is a serious dinner wine for roast beef, lamb, game or a hard cheese. Decant it carefully off any sediment and serve it just below room temperature.

Taste

Dense purple in youth, now garnet at the rim. The nose is classic and savoury, with red fruits, cedar, tobacco, wet earth, smoke, cigar wrapper and spiced cherries. The palate is medium to full bodied, bright, fresh and crisp, with real weight and density and silky, melted tannins. There are leafy notes, herbs and crunchy red fruit on the finish, as you'd expect from a cool vintage. Ready to drink now, and there is little to be gained by waiting.

Wine Press Ratings

90 Points - Jeff Leve (1999 Vintage)

"Bright, fresh, crisp and ready to go"

Blend

Cabernet Sauvignon 62%, Merlot 33%, Cabernet Franc 4%, Petit Verdot 1%

About the Producer

Château Montrose is a Second Growth in Saint-Estèphe, facing the Gironde estuary, on deep gravel over clay. It was created in the early 19th century by Étienne Théodore Dumoulin on a piece of land called La Lande d'Escargeon, and it was ranked a Second Growth in 1855. The vineyard surrounds the château in one continuous sweep, which is very rare in Bordeaux. The Bouygues brothers, Martin and Olivier, bought it in 2006 and invested heavily in renovation and environmental projects, so this 1999 was made before their time.
