Talbot is the Fourth Growth that critics say embodies the ideal Saint-Julien, with a lovely bouquet, silky tannins and a talent for ageing, and it has been in the same family for over a century. Cabernet Sauvignon leads with blackcurrant and structure, while Merlot adds roundness and a little Petit Verdot adds spice. Decant it and serve it with roast lamb, beef or duck. It is a Médoc classic that tastes great at any time, though it will reward a few years in the cellar.

Taste

Deep and fragrant, with blackcurrant, cherry and dark berries, dried flowers, fresh herbs like basil and rosemary, orange zest and petals. Smoky currants, tobacco leaf, leather and a touch of chocolate add depth. The palate is medium to full bodied with a lovely texture, fine, polished tannins and a great balance of intensity and finesse. There is energy from start to finish, and the finish is long and savoury. Aged in 60% new French oak. Lovely with a decant now, and it should improve for 20 years or more.

Wine Press Ratings

96 Points - James Suckling (2022 Vintage)

"Great balance of intensity and finesse"

96 Points - Wine Spectator (2022 Vintage)

95 Points - Decanter (2022 Vintage)

Blend

Cabernet Sauvignon 70%, Merlot 25%, Petit Verdot 5%

About the Producer

Château Talbot is a Fourth Growth of Saint-Julien, said to be named after John Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury, the English commander known as the English Achilles. It has been owned by the Cordier family since the early 20th century, and today Nancy Bignon-Cordier and her husband Jean-Paul Bignon run it. The vines grow in one single block of deep gravel near the Gironde estuary. Jean-Michel Laporte, formerly of Château La Conseillante, has directed the estate since 2017, with Éric Boissenot as consultant. The vineyard is certified High Environmental Value (HVE Level 3), which recognises its care for biodiversity and reduced use of vineyard treatments.
