Clos L'Eglise Pomerol 2021
Clos L'Eglise Pomerol 2021
Even in the context of Pomerol, Clos l’Eglise is a tiny property. In an average year, its 5.98-hectare vineyard (which isn’t a walled ‘clos’) yields only 2,800 cases of wine, and given its rising popularity, stocks are quickly exhausted. The secret to its success – alongside the huge investment by its owners the billionaire Garcan-Cathiard family – is its sandy-gravel topsoil, hard-pan subsoil and climate which is drier in the summer and winter than further west in the Medoc. Critics have raved about the Clos l’Eglise 2021 with James Suckling awarding it 94-95 points saying, ‘A very fine-tannined red with currant, berry, violet and dried orange peel. Medium body, firm tannins and a linear finish. Very fine and pretty.’
Wine Press Ratings
94 Points - Jeff Leve
"Deeply colored, the wine is plush, soft, round and rich, with a silky, plummy, chocolate and wet earth character. The wine is richly-textured, elegant, deep and fresh, with a black cherry, licorice, cocoa infused finish that feels just great on your palate. The wine blends 80% Merlot with 20% Cabernet Franc. 13.5% ABV. The harvest took place September 27 - September 30. Drink from 2024-2045."
Taste
‘The 2021 Clos L'Eglise is a dense, powerful Pomerol. There's real energy driving the red/purplish fruit, lavender and spice. Far from an easy-going Pomerol, Clos L'Eglise is going to need time to be at its best, but there's no rush. The 2021 is a bit compact, and yet all the elements are there for it to develop into a very fine, compelling wine.’ Vinous 92-95 points.
About the Producer
Clos l’Eclise lies in the centre-east of Pomerol, next to Chateau Clinet. Its sloping vineyards are planted with 70% Merlot, 30% and Cabernet Franc and have an average age of around 35 years. Since 1997 it has been owned by the Garcan-Cathiard family who have transformed this eighteenth-century property so that it now ranks amongst Pomerol’s finest. The vineyard is treated organically, and intervention in the winery is kept to a minimum. The wines are aged for between 18 and 24 months in new oak barrels before release, an expensive treatment that adds even greater richness to this opulent wine.
