Domaine Edmond Rentz Riesling Vendanges Tardives 2018
Domaine Edmond Rentz Riesling Vendanges Tardives 2018
'Vendage Tardive' or late harvest is a particular wine classification in Alsace where the grapes are left on the vine for as long as possible to dehydrate and concentrate the sugars and aromatics. For this wonderfully opulent riesling, the grapes are harvested manually at the end of October before being pressed in a pneumatic press in order to extract the juice and aromas. Naturally present yeast on the grapes will start the alcoholic fermentation process that will change the grape juice into wine and after two to three months after the fermentation process, the wine is racked in order to start maturing. Before bottling, each vat is filtered in order to guarantee the organic stability and conservation of the wine and then it is kept in cellars for two years during which it undergoes multiple tests and blind tastings to ensure it meets the quality and standards expected to earn the right to be labelled as 'Vendanges Tardives'. Complex aromas of dried fruits, candied citrus fruits and minerality. On the palate, it is well-balanced, has good length and hints of candied grapefruit and minerality. This can be drunk now, but will only increase in complexity over the years to come.
Taste
A mellow white wine with a yellow colour and complex aromas of dried fruits, candied citrus fruits and minerality. This wine really is exceptional by its quality and maturity. On the palate, it is well-balanced, has good length and hints of candied grapefruit and minerality. A great “vin de garde” which has remarkably longevity.
Environmental Commitment
For over 20 years, Catherine and Patrick have strived to develop agricultural practices more respectful of the environment and have today committed themselves to a process of high environmental value (HVE) which, much like the organic label, is an accreditation that recognises environmental preservation.
This accreditation, with results-based obligations in terms of biodiversity, vine protection, fertilisation and protecting water resources, fully complies with the objectives of the Grenelle Environment Forum.
About the Producer
It was at Zellenberg in 1785 that Thomas Rentz became fascinated in winemaking, setting up his own vineyard and producing his own wine for his family’s consumption and some local taverns.
From 1920, Edmond Rentz enlarged the size of his vineyard and dedicated his life to the wines of Alsace. Amongst the first to start using modern bottling technics from 1930, where he decided to tailor the quality of his wines and place his name on each bottle, thereby creating the Edmond Rentz brand.
His son, Raymond Rentz took over the estate in 1953 and extended his vineyard around Zellenberg, Riquewihr, Hunawihr, Ribeauvillé and Bergheim. He built a new cellar and combined age-old traditions with modernity. He worked hard to further improve the quality of his wines, vinifying both vines and terroirs.
Catherine Rentz and her brother Patrick then join the family business in 1995 and developed a form of viticulture that was more environmentally friendly. This evolution however stays true to the family spirit of always seeking to improve the quality, distinctiveness and authenticity of their wine.
