The couple built a wine export business to Taiwan through the late 1980s, then launched Hedges Cellars in 1987 with their first shipment — a Columbia Valley Cabernet-Merlot — to Sweden. In 1989 they bought 50 acres on Red Mountain in the Yakima Valley and planted 40 acres of Bordeaux varieties, helping pioneer what would become Washington's most prestigious red-wine AVA.
