The 2023 has a peppery lift and refreshing acidity, so it is more energetic than heavy, with dark cherry, black raspberry and baking spice. Warm and generous without being jammy, it is made for barbecue, burgers, lamb or a platter of cured meats. The palate is medium bodied, smooth and supple, with flavours of cherry, savoury anise and cracked pepper, bright acidity that gives it verticality, and a salty lift. The tannins are briary, and the finish is long and harmonious. Under winemaker Tegan Passalacqua, the winery now makes around 50 wines from more than 50 vineyards, many with vines dating back to the late 1800s, and most of them Zinfandel and Petite Sirah. Its vineyards are either certified organic by California Certified Organic Farmers or in the process, and the wines are fermented with native yeasts.
