Lou Miranda - Barossa Valley, Australia

Lou Miranda - Barossa Valley, Australia

If you spend any time in the Barossa, you soon discover that “old vine” can mean anything from a label flourish to a genuinely lived-in family story. Lou Miranda Estate belongs firmly in the second camp. This is a family‑owned, 100‑acre estate at the southern end of the valley in Rowland Flat, where every bottle still comes from their own vineyards within a short drive of the winery.

A Family Business

The Miranda story began long before the brand name. In 1938, Francesco “Pop” Miranda left southern Italy for Australia with a very old‑world idea: good wine, food and family belong at the same table. His son Lou carried that heritage into the Barossa, shifting from grape growing to building a fully fledged estate in his own name, and it is that foundation the current generation is working from today.

Now it is three sisters who carry the name on the label and run the winery in practice. Lisa, Angela and Victoria grew up among the vines and around the cellar door, and each of them has carved out a distinct role in the business. Together they look after the vineyards, the winery, the restaurant and the story that connects all of those pieces for drinkers in Australia and further afield.

The people

Lisa Miranda is the estate’s General Manager and the eldest of the three. With a business background from the University of South Australia and many years running the family operation, she links the vineyards, the cellar, Lou’s by Horizon and the wider trade, so that the experience feels joined‑up whether you are tasting at the cellar door or buying a case in the UK.

Angela Miranda is the winemaker and middle sister, someone who grew up between gumboots and fermenters and then went looking for experience beyond the Barossa. After studying oenology at the University of Adelaide she worked vintages in other Australian regions and overseas, then returned to Rowland Flat to take charge of the family wines, bringing a mix of Miranda DNA and broader technical perspective to the style of the wines.

Victoria Miranda completes the trio as the marketing and brand lead. Based at the winery, she looks after everything from labels and packaging to digital and on‑site communications, and makes sure that the way Lou Miranda Estate looks and sounds matches the warmth visitors experience when they drive up the Barossa Valley Way and step into the cellar door.

Old Vines

Behind them sit the vineyards that justify the old‑vine story in the first place. The estate is spread over four sites and includes centenarian blocks of mourvèdre planted in 1897 and shiraz planted in 1907, now recognised under the Barossa Old Vine Charter. These parcels feed into their Old Vine and Heritage Series wines, while younger plantings of shiraz, cabernet, merlot, chardonnay and pinot grigio support the broader portfolio, including the Leone range and bolder, more contemporary labels such as Fierce III.
