Torrontes

Torrontes

Argentina’s answer to Albariño—with a twist. Torrontés is the country’s signature white grape, grown mostly in the high-altitude vineyards of Salta and Mendoza, where the cooler nights help preserve its zingy freshness. Intensely aromatic—think orange blossom, lychee and peach—it can smell like a fruit salad but surprise you on the palate with its dry, crisp, and often slightly bitter edge. A bit of a Jekyll and Hyde grape, and all the more interesting for it. When handled well, Torrontés is a wonderfully expressive, food-friendly white that deserves more than just a passing glance.
