Rias Baixas

Rias Baixas

The heartland of Albariño and Galicia’s most famous DO, Rías Baixas hugs Spain’s misty Atlantic coast, where ocean breezes, granite soils and regular rainfall shape wines of remarkable freshness and purity. This is white wine country, and Albariño — with its citrus bite, saline edge and floral lift — is the undisputed star. The best examples balance vibrancy with texture, often capable of surprising depth and ageing potential. With a patchwork of sub-zones and increasing focus on single-parcel bottlings, Rías Baixas is evolving fast — proof that coastal Spain can do precision and poise as well as power.

The iconic Mar de Frades Albariño is a pure expression of the unique characteristics of the Albariño grape variety.  Ghostly pale it offers intense aromas of lemon, grapefruit, orange zest, crushed rocks, gardenia flowers, and melon.  In the mouth its tangy and as fresh as the Atlantic breezes that play such a part in its creation.  Beyond this first rush are flavours of tropical lychee and pineapple, mandarin with delicate balsamic and a hint of salinity.
