Airfield Founders Series Arthur H. Lloyd 2022
Airfield Founders Series Arthur H. Lloyd 2022
94 Points - International Wine Report. Airfield Estates' Founders Series honors the four generations of Millers who built the family's Yakima Valley estate, and this bottling carries the name of H. Lloyd Miller — the family patriarch who arrived from Illinois in 1907, leased part of his land to a WWII flight school, and later bought the surplus buildings for a dollar to found the family's Airport Ranch. The 2022 vintage is a serious, cellar-worthy Bordeaux-style blend, and a fitting gift for anyone who appreciates a wine with real family history behind it.

Taste
Dark cherry, blackberry marmalade and blackcurrant lead the nose, layered with cola, smoked beechwood, graphite, bramble berry, truffle, salted caramel, leather and incense — a wine of real complexity. Drink now through 2044, with peak maturity around 2039; pair with slow-braised short rib or a well-aged hard cheese.
The Wine
A Bordeaux-style blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, hand-harvested in late October from the finest Reserve-tier blocks of Airfield's 830-acre estate vineyard, then destemmed and optically sorted. Aged 22 months in 100% new French oak, with 14 days of extended post-fermentation skin contact and twice-monthly lees stirring for four months. 142 cases produced. 14.3% ABV.
About the Producer
Airfield Estates traces four generations of the Miller family's stewardship of the same patch of Yakima Valley land. H. Lloyd Miller arrived from Illinois in 1907 and began farming the property; during World War II he leased part of the unirrigated acreage to a civilian flight school, and more than 500 Army Air Corps pilots trained on three dirt runways there before the school closed in 1944. When the war ended, Miller bought the surplus hangars and barracks for a dollar and turned them into the headquarters of the family's Airport Ranch — two of the original hangars still stand today. His son, Donald Deets Miller, planted the estate's first trial vines — Chardonnay, Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Cabernet Sauvignon — in 1968, laying the groundwork for what would become a full vineyard operation.
Don's son, Mike Miller, founded Airfield Estates Winery in 2005 alongside his own children, winemaker Marcus and Lori, turning the family's aviation history into one of Washington's most distinctive labels — every bottle carries nose-art, tail numbers and runway motifs that trace back to those wartime pilots. The wines are grown on the family's 830-acre estate vineyard in the Yakima Valley AVA, farmed sustainably and largely in a vegan style, and the range has picked up a long list of accolades over the years, including 90+ point scores from Wine Enthusiast, Wine Spectator, James Suckling and Wine Advocate, plus Double Platinum and Best in Show wins at regional competitions.
