Long Shadows Poet's Leap Riesling 2025
Long Shadows Poet's Leap Riesling 2025
94 Points - James Suckling. Washington's benchmark Riesling at a friendly price, born from a partnership with Armin Diel of Schlossgut Diel in Germany's Nahe, and made in the German style, with a touch of sweetness balanced by racy acidity. White peach and bright citrus lead, with guavas, pears and pear blossoms, underscored by an elegant thread of minerality. It is lively, precise and just off dry, so it is refreshing rather than sweet. The old vine Riesling comes from certified sustainable sites in the White Bluffs. Serve it well chilled with spicy Thai or Indian dishes, shellfish, roast duck or a platter of soft cheeses.

Taste
Expressive aromas of white peach and bright citrus, with guavas, pears and pear blossoms, underscored by an elegant thread of minerality. The palate is medium bodied with good concentration, lively and precise, carried by a beautifully balanced acidity that stretches into a long, generous finish. Pure and varietally true, with a subtle touch of sweetness, at 8.6 grams of residual sugar per litre. Fermented in stainless steel. Delicious now, and it should keep for many years.

"nice medium body and concentration"
The Wine
Fruit is drawn from some of Washington's oldest Riesling sites — Sagemoor, Gamache and DuBrul in the Yakima Valley — fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel, with extended lees contact to preserve freshness and build texture. 12.1% ABV.
About the Producer
Long Shadows Vintners was founded in 2002 by Allen Shoup, former CEO of Chateau Ste. Michelle, on an audacious idea: invite a different world-renowned winemaker to craft each wine in the range, working alongside resident director of winemaking Gilles Nicault, and let each one "cast their own shadow" over a single Washington bottling. The result is a small collection of "best of type" wines that pair global star power with genuine Columbia Valley provenance.
Armin Diel owns and runs Schlossgut Diel in Germany's Nahe region, one of the country's most celebrated Riesling estates, and for years co-authored the influential Gault Millau WeinGuide Deutschland, shaping how German wine is rated and understood. He first travelled to Walla Walla in 2003 to help craft Long Shadows' very first release, working alongside Gilles Nicault on vineyard selection and fermentation to translate his Nahe expertise onto Washington fruit. Diel handed winemaking duties to Nicault in 2016 as regular transatlantic travel became harder to sustain, but Poet's Leap still follows the dry, precise, age-worthy style he established from the start.
