Man O' War Dreadnought Syrah 2019

Man O' War Dreadnought Syrah 2019

96 Points - Decanter. The Man O' War Dreadnought 2018 is a classically styled Syrah with really lifted spice and floral notes overlaying a more savoury umami character. Underneath the aromatic lift is a layer of red berry fruit characters which lead into a soft and supple palate following with a clear focused acidity and fine tannins, all finishing with a trademark long persistence that is fresh and slightly salty.

Wine Press Ratings

96 Points - Decanter (2019)

"Powdery tannins with hints of tar alongside black cherry tart. Cured meats with fresh peppercorn on the palate, and a very savoury finish. Freddy Bulmer: Lovely inviting and vinous nose, with great purity of fruit and attractive savoury spices. The palate is silky and juicy, with just enough fresh acidity. Roger Jones: A delicate, refined nose, with violets, rosebuds, cedar and toasty notes, followed by dark brambly fruits. There’s a lovely uplifting freshness on the palate. Drinking Window: 2023 - 2033."

Wine Making

The Dreadnought Syrah comes from steep hillside vineyards and is carefully hand harvested before delivery to the winery. The fruit is put across a sorting table before being de stemmed and delivered to open vats for fermentation and in select cases whole clusters where included in the ferment. Syrah is allowed to ferment with wild yeasts with plunging or pump overs being carried out twice daily. Following an extended time on skins (average 35days in vat) the wines are gently pressed and taken straight to barrel for natural malolactic fermentation in the spring. The wines are racked once to a blend after 18 months before further maturing in tank for 3 months prior to bottling.

Taste

"A developing bouquet showcasing aromas of fresh and dried red currants, raspberry and tart plums. A violet and leather quality alongside some toasty barrel spices, anise and clove layer in complexity and depth. Delicious on the palate, reflecting all the bouquet has to offer, firm tannins and a backbone of acidity. The dry finish highlights the tannins, but the fruit flavours and violet anise combination also leave an impression on the finish. Best drinking from 2022 through 2028."

About the Producer

Man O’ War is steeped in history dating back to early Polynesian adventurers. The protected cove has provided safe harbour during many rough seas. The bay was named by navigators in the late 1700s. The magnificent Kauri trees we’re noted in the early shipping journals, they made ideal masts for the naval Man O’ War warships, and thus the name Man O’ War was bestowed upon this special place.

On the challenging and remote landscape of Waiheke Island in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf you’ll find Man O’ War. A 4,500-acre family farm with over 150-acres under vine. The first vines were planted in 1993, and over the next two decades they explored the farm and analysed the kingdom that lies beneath in search of the best single vineyard locations to one day make world-class wine.
