Patz & Hall Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 2017

Patz & Hall Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 2017

90 Points - Wine Enthusiast. A sensational Pinot Noir ! "A savoury edge of sage and dried herb combines with richer flavors of berries and cola. Textured tannins and bright acidity lend support to this balanced wine from a cool-climate appellation." This is an approachable and beautiful Pinot Noir with fine-grained tannins, freshness and purity. Intense aromas of Bing cherry, strawberry, carnation flowers and liquorice notes pour from the glass. Though nicely dense and full on the palate, the wine avoids heaviness with fresh acidity and bright red fruit flavours that resolve on a long, detailed finish. Absolutely delicious.

Eighteen small, independently family-owned vineyard sites come together in this gorgeous display of Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. This is an approachable Pinot Noir with fine-grained tannins, freshness and purity. Intense aromas of Bing cherry, strawberry, carnation flowers and liquorice notes pour from the glass. Though nicely dense and full on the palate, the wine avoids heaviness with fresh acidity and bright red fruit flavours that resolve on a long, detailed finish.

About the Producer

The seeds for Patz & Hall were planted in the 1980s when assistant winemaker James Hall and national sales manager Donald Patz struck up a close friendship while working together at Flora Springs Winery and Vineyards. The two discovered a mutual enthusiasm for a rich and compelling style of wine made by applying traditional winemaking techniques to fruit from elite, small vineyards. Inspired to combine their winemaking and sales talents, James and Donald joined with partners Anne Moses and Heather Patz, to establish Patz & Hall.

Together, they turned Patz & Hall into one of California’s most highly regarded wineries with a celebrated portfolio of single-vineyard wines. To achieve their goal of making exceptional limited-production wines from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the four founders each focused their specialized knowledge and expertise on different areas of the winery’s operations. This integrated approach, along with a commitment to developing close personal relationships with many of California’s finest growers—people like Larry Hyde, Lee Hudson and the Martinelli and Pisoni families—became the cornerstones of the winery’s success.

90 Points - Wine Enthusiast

"A savoury edge of sage and dried herb combines with richer flavors of berries and cola. Textured tannins and bright acidity lend support to this balanced wine from a cool-climate appellation."

93 Points - Jeb Dunnuck (2016)

"The 2016 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast comes from a handful of sites on the Sonoma Coast, and it too is more ruby/plum coloured. Ripe strawberries, dried flowers, sweet earth, and spice notes all emerge from the glass, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a silky, elegant texture, ripe tannins, and a great finish. As Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir goes, it's another rich, powerful wine from this estate. It should keep for 8-10 years or more."

93 Points - Wine Enthusiast (2016)

"This is a heck of a deal for the quality: an appellation wine with juicy intensity and a rich layering of red and blue fruit. With plenty of tannic power beneath its integrated texture are secondary notes of forest, clove and black tea that complement the fruit beautifully." VIRGINIE BOONE

90 points Wine Spectator (2016)

"Intense and vibrant flavours of dark cherry, cedary spice and cola are backed by powerful acidity, with medium-grained tannins on the sinewy finish. Best from 2020 through 2023."
