Wine 96 Point Rating

Chateau Langoa Barton Saint-Julien 2010

Chateau Langoa Barton Saint-Julien 2010

96 Points - Decanter. From the family behind Léoville Barton, who have made wine in Saint-Julien for 200 years, this mature 2010 is a refined, precise and classic Saint-Julien, with real interest and drinkability at its peak. The Wine Advocate found it softer and more developed than Barton wines usually are, and the vineyard is tended without herbicides, with traditional ploughing. Cabernet Sauvignon leads with blackcurrant and structure, while Merlot and Cabernet Franc add juicy fruit and a floral lift. It is vinified and aged in the same way as its famous sibling. Decant it and serve it with roast lamb, beef or a mushroom dish.

Taste

Dark and classic on the nose, with tobacco, liquorice, potpourri and blackcurrants, plus black cherries, blueberry and star anise. The palate is grippy and intense yet juicy, bright and weighty, with tannins that fill the mouth with a half chewy, half mineral texture and pristine fruit. There is a lovely sense of clarity and precision, structured but not heavy, and the finish is full of fresh red berries and minty cola touches. Aged for 16 to 18 months in French oak, 60% of it new. Drinking well now, and it should keep until the early 2040s.

About the Producer

Château Langoa Barton is a Third Growth of Saint-Julien, in the hands of the Barton family since 1821, when it was bought by the Irish born wine merchants Barton & Gustier. The family's story in Bordeaux goes back to 1722, and in 1826 they also acquired a quarter of the Léoville estate, which became Château Léoville Barton, the wines of which are made in the cellars at Langoa. Anthony Barton ran the estates until 2022, and today the tenth generation oversees them, with Lilian Barton-Sartorius as president and Damien Barton Sartorius as managing director. The vineyard is certified High Environmental Value (HVE), with a growing part of it farmed organically, and the ploughing is traditional, without herbicides.
