Long Shadows Feather Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Long Shadows Feather Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

94 Points - James Suckling. Long Shadows' Cabernet Sauvignon, made in collaboration with Randy Dunn — the Napa Valley vintner Long Shadows founder Allen Shoup calls "Mr. Cabernet" — and still built to his blueprint of structure, restraint and age-worthiness. It's the wine for serious Napa and Bordeaux Cabernet drinkers who want their reds built for the cellar rather than the cocktail hour, and its pedigree and presentation make it a standout gift for anyone who takes their Cabernet seriously.

Wine Press Ratings

94 Points - James Suckling (2022 Vintage)

"Aromas of ripe blackcurrants, cherry chocolate, mocha, crushed walnuts and wet earth. Full-bodied with a wide, meaty structure, it offers dense, velvety tannins and a deep core of fruit. Long and encompassing."

Taste

Black cherry, sweet spice, nutmeg and earthy undertones lead to concentrated dark fruit, with silky tannins and a sophisticated, long finish. Built for two decades in the cellar.

The Wine

100% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from Horse Heaven Hills, White Bluffs, Weinbau Vineyard's Block 10 and historic 1972 plantings at Bacchus and Dionysus. Aged 22 months in 85% new French oak. 15.1% ABV.

About the Producer

Long Shadows Vintners was founded in 2002 by Allen Shoup, former CEO of Chateau Ste. Michelle, on an audacious idea: invite a different world-renowned winemaker to craft each wine in the range, working alongside resident director of winemaking Gilles Nicault, and let each one "cast their own shadow" over a single Washington bottling. The result is a small collection of "best of type" wines that pair global star power with genuine Columbia Valley provenance.

Randy Dunn is one of the most respected names in American Cabernet. He joined Caymus Vineyards in 1975 and, over a decade as winemaker, helped build the Special Selection bottling that would go on to be named Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year in 1989. In 1979 he struck out on his own, planting on Napa's cool, high-elevation Howell Mountain and becoming one of the AVA's founding vintners — building a reputation for dense, structured, age-worthy Cabernet made without regard for fashion. Dunn has never chased high alcohol or flashy scores; he's said plainly that he dislikes wines built to be sipped and spat rather than drunk with food, and keeps his own Cabernets built for the table and the cellar rather than the tasting room. Shoup sought him out specifically for Feather, betting that Dunn's cool-climate, food-first sensibility would translate naturally onto Washington fruit. The wine's name is a nod to something entirely personal: Randy Dunn's own collection of feathers.
