96 Points - Decanter. The smallest of Sauternes' famous 1855 first growths, sitting right opposite Château d'Yquem, in a handy half bottle that's perfect for two. Liquid gold with apricot, marmalade and lemon curd, lifted by a freshness that stops it ever feeling heavy. Sémillon leads, touched by noble rot, which is the fungus that concentrates the grapes into sweet, honeyed richness. The vineyard is farmed with integrated methods and picked by hand in several passes, so only the best berries make it into the bottle. Serve it chilled with foie gras, blue cheese or a tarte tatin, and you have dessert sorted.

Pale to medium lemon gold in the glass. The nose is bold and expressive, with apricot jam, orange confit, candied ginger, lemon meringue pie and lime blossom, plus marzipan, pineapple and a hint of almond croissant. The palate is silky and rich, with ripe apricot, marmalade, honey and layers of dry botrytis, then a lemon curd start and a lime zest finish. A proper kick of acidity on the finish and a touch of gunsmoke give it depth and great balance. Fermented and aged in oak barrels. Delicious now, and it should improve for decades, with a drinking window running to 2048.

About the Producer
Clos Haut-Peyraguey sits at the highest point of the Bommes hill in Sauternes, opposite Château d'Yquem, with a first harvest recorded in 1618. It was classified a first growth in 1855 and became a separate estate in 1879, when the original property was split in two. At just 8.5 hectares in a single walled block, it is the smallest of the Sauternes first growths. The Pauly family ran it from 1914, until Bernard Magrez acquired it at the end of 2012. The vines grow on gravelly, sandy soils near the Ciron, the small river whose cool mists help noble rot develop, and the grapes are picked by hand in successive passes.

As indicated in our Quality Promise we will happily refund or exchange any faulty bottles. All we ask is the bottles in question are returned to us at least half full for verification purposes. If a bottle is broken on delivery we will also replace or refund it but we do require photographic evidence of the breakage. Equally we can arrange for the bottles to be collected the next time you receive a delivery from us.
Should we be unable to fulfil any part, or all of an order, Perfect Cellar (Beyond the Bottle Ltd) will suggest comparable substitutions. You are free to refuse these suggestions and are eligible for a full refund of relevant parts of the order.
In all instances, Perfect Cellar (Beyond the Bottle Ltd) must be informed of any claim within 24 hours of receipt of delivery by email or telephone. All refunds will be issued after we have received and approved the faulty items and the amount will be re-credited to your account within 30 days. The amount refunded will be equal to the full amount paid for the relevant products at the time of purchase and must be made by the same payment method as the original sale.
If you choose to cancel your contract of sale with Perfect Cellar (Beyond the Bottle Ltd) you may do so within 30 days of receipt of the goods. If the goods have already been dispatched they must be returned to us unopened and undamaged, and Perfect Cellar (Beyond the Bottle Ltd) will not be liable for any costs associated with the original or return delivery.
No refund can be given when a case has left bond as the value will be affected. Individual bottles of Fine Wine will be considered for refund on a case-by-case basis.
We advise contacting our Customers Services team before making any claim to ensure the process goes as smoothly as possible.
Advent Calendars - Due to the made-to-order nature of our Advent Calendars, they are not eligible for a full refund. However, we reserve the right to issue a refund in the form of store credit.
